Software will happily show a profit and loss for any range you highlight. That report is a print of whatever was coded, including duplicates, including transfers called sales, including a card that was never agreed. A highlighted range is not handed over as if the bank had agreed.

The work begins at the earliest month that does not match. Sometimes that is last month. Sometimes it is last spring. The length changes the calendar. It does not change the order. Skipping ahead to the month you wish were current leaves every later figure standing on a hole.

An unlocked month that happens to look fine is still open. Someone can add a receipt next Thursday and the profit moves. We say closed only when the operating account matches, the card matches, the holding line lists only items that still need a document, and the period will not accept a casual edit.

Items on the holding line are not hidden. They are the queue. Each one ends as a cost, a draw or contribution, a loan, or a transfer. Until the document arrives, they do not become profit and they do not become a story we prefer.

Two open months can often be finished in a short engagement if the statements are in the file. Ten open months are a project with a sequence, and the return for that year waits until the sequence reaches the last month the return needs. We will tell you which of those you have after we see the feed, not before.

If one month still feels finished, name that month on the form. It is a better starting fact than a feeling that things have been behind for a while.
