Bookkeeping Cleanup Help the first month that closes
One printed month sits in front of you with the bank column and the books column finally the same. One month that matches is worth more than a year of screenshots.
What that month has to show
The operating bank matches. The card matches. Unidentified items are still visible.

The first close is not the month with the nicest profit. It is the earliest open month we can finish. The bank statement and the book agree to the cent, or the difference is a listed item with a reason. The card statement agrees the same way. Loans agree to the lender page. Payroll agrees to the provider register for that month.
Anything still unknown sits on a holding line on the balance sheet, not inside profit. You can see the amount and the question. When a receipt shows up, the item moves to a cost, a draw, a loan, or a transfer. The month can lock with a short holding line. It cannot lock with a hidden one.
The pattern is the point
The second month should take less explaining than the first.

Once one month has a shape, the next month uses the same accounts, the same holding line, and the same order. New kinds of money get a name the first time they appear, not a new account every week. A chart that grows a synonym every Friday is how the return later finds three names for one cost.
We stop adding accounts that repeat an idea you already have. Supplies is one account until a real reason splits it. The reason is a tax line or a decision you make, not a preference for more detail than the statements can carry.
Write the month on the form even if you are guessing. A wrong guess is still a start, and we will correct it against the statements. The goal of the first call is a month we can finish, not a year we can admire.
A worked example, not a client file
Take the oldest open month and match it before you name a profit.

A worked example, built as a sketch and not from a client file. Take the oldest open month. The operating statement and the books agree, except one grocery line and one transfer. The grocery line stays on the holding line until you say whether it was for the shop or for home. The transfer is matched to the savings account on the same day, and it is not called a sale. Payroll for that month agrees to the provider register, wages on one line and the net that left the bank on another.
The card statement for that month is still missing, so the card stays open and the month is not called finished. When the card statement arrives, the same order is used again. The second month should need less explaining, because the accounts and the holding line already have names. Profit is whatever remains after that match. It is not a target we push the lines toward.
The printout of that month is what we keep in the pack. The bank is matched. The books are matched. The grocery line is still waiting. The transfer is matched to savings. The card stays open until its statement is in the folder. That printout is the pattern the next month copies, and the month is not called finished while the card page is still missing.
If this is the month you are in
Name the month you hope can be the first one finished.
