The return folder is still on the shelf because the months under it are not closed. What reaches a return is only what those matched months already show. Skipping the months does not make the return true.

Preparers are sometimes asked to file from a download that nobody has agreed to the statements. The return then inherits every transfer called a sale and every personal cost called a supply. If a question comes later, the papers do not support the lines. We would rather the return sit on the shelf than carry that risk for you.
Shelf does not mean forgotten. It means the return has a start condition. The months it covers are matched, the payroll registers agree, the contractor list can be supported, and the asset list ties to something you can point at. When those exist, the return moves.

An extension, an estimate from last year's safe amount, or a partial year that truly matches.

Those are different tools. An extension buys time for an individual return. It is not a cleanup. An estimate based on last year is allowed to be boring. A partial set of matched months can support a conversation about the range. None of these is the same act as filing a full return from an open file.
If your date is 15 October or 15 April or one of the estimate dates, name it on the form. We will say which tool fits. We will not use the date as a reason to skip the match.
If the return is a partnership, an individual, or an entity, say which one. The shelf is the same idea for each. The months underneath it are not. Name the entity if more than one file is in the pile.
